Zurich Equity Group pioneered a unique non-recourse collateralized stock lending program under which an investor utilizes a quantity of publicly-traded stock as collateral for a two- to five-year cash loan. During the term of the loan, the securities are held in an account for the investor’s benefit at a leading securities custodial entity. The investor is free to use the loan proceeds for any corporate or personal purpose and pays only a low amount of quarterly interest during the loan term. When the non-recourse loan matures, the investor makes a single balloon payment of the loan principal balance and the custodian returns the securities to the investor.

The investor makes just a single, absolute, balloon payment of the loan principal balance when the non-recourse loan matures at the end of its term, and the custodial entity then returns the securities to the investor. Generally, the collateral securities must meet certain minimum liquidity and daily trading volume minimums, but an investor may use any non-restricted securities for this purpose — e.g. securities issued in recent IPOs and stock that is not otherwise eligible to secure a margin loan. Under certain circumstances in limited markets, restricted securities may also qualify as collateral for a nonrecourse stock loan.

If the investor elects not to repay the non-recourse loan principal balance on maturity, he or she may simply walk away from the transaction, in which event Zurich Equity Group's sole recourse is to take the full legal and equitable title and ownership to the collateral. An investor may borrow up to 65% of the value of the collateral (or such other amount as is approved during Zurich Equity Group's internal underwriting process). Each loan transaction is custom-structured to meet the unique needs of an individual investor.
